Swaraj Tractors, a part of the Mahindra Group, on Monday said it has invested Rs 200 crore to develop a new range of tractors in the 40-50 HP category to meet the growing needs of farmers. The company says the new products will eventually replace its existing tractors in this category.
Harish Chavan, CEO, of Swaraj Division, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), says the new products have been developed to meet the demands of modern agriculture. When asked to elaborate on the new tractors, Chavan said, it has a wide market range from low-feature trims to variants with high-end features like four-wheel drive to meet different requirements. Talking about the company's investment in developing the new tractors, Chavan said, "We have invested around Rs 200 crore on the project."
The 40-50 HP segment accounts for around 50 percent of sales in the domestic tractor industry. Swaraj manufactures tractors from its two manufacturing plants in Mohali, Punjab. “A third plant is also under construction,” Chavan said. It is likely to arrive by the third quarter of this year. We will commission it in the fourth quarter. The plant is in the final stages of implementation.” The new tractor range is priced at Rs 6.9 lakh for the base variant (42 HP) and goes up to Rs 9.95 lakh for the 50 HP top-end model.
